Most Common Job Interview Mistakes
Get a leg up on the competition using these little-known tips:
Most unsuccessful job candidates have no idea why they've failed to land the job. Chances are they've committed at least one of these deadly interview sins. Here's what to avoid on your own interview.
First, never identify yourself as a self-centered "job hunter, or use phrases like "here's what I want" or "here's what I'm looking for." Instead, make it clear you're a "problem solver," or "people person," there to actually help the company in some way.
Second, never appear too cautious -- employers look for people willing to take smart risks. One of the most common ways of looking too careful is sitting erect in your chair, stiff and upright, or else responding too dutifully to the interviewer's questions. Pay attention, but relax.
Third, don't make this most shocking error: don't neglect to do your homework on the company. You can't position yourself as a problem-solver if you don't know what your company does, let alone wants. In the Internet Age there is no excuse for not doing some pre-interview background reading and research. Be prepared to shine, and chances are you will.
Of course, you'll also be careful NEVER to forget a simple follow-up call or note once the interview is over.
